Hey :) do you consider yourself hispanic and/or latino? I was just wondering because i don't really understand the difference… :/ thanks!
I identify as African- Caribbean. I was raised in Puerto Rico by way of Cuba. I identify as such because it honors my African heritage. Also, because they are both nationalities so, I wouldn’t be able to claim them as an ethnicity.
In regards to the differences between identifying as Hispanic vs. Latino, I encourage you to do research. There’s a lot to learn on the subject. One acknowledges its African roots while the other separates itself and identifies solely with its Spanish heritage.
“Ralph Waldo Emerson once asked what we would do if the stars only came out once every thousand years. No one would sleep that night, of course. The world would create new religions overnight. We would be ecstatic, delirious, made rapturous by the glory of God. Instead, the stars come out every night and we watch television.”—Paul Hawkens (via creatingaquietmind)
The war on drugs has been waged primarily in communities of color where people of color are more likely to receive higher offenses.According to the Human Rights Watch, people of color are no more likely to use or sell illegal drugs than whites, but they have higher rate of arrests. African Americans comprise 14 percent of regular drug users but are 37 percent of those arrested for drug offenses. From 1980 to 2007 about one in three of the 25.4 million adults arrested for drugs was African American.
